start your own
water experiment

Take meter readings over a few days or a week to identify how much water you are currently using.
Enlist the family to try and reduce water use as much as you can over a week and record daily readings, eg 7.00am each morning.
We've been doing this for several years now and have gone from using 900 litres daily down to an average of 220.
Some of the things we have done are ...
  • Use low flow shower heads and limit the time under the shower.

  • a toothbrush cup - we half fill it and use it to pre-rinse our brush, brush our teeth, rinse our mouth out and then use the rest of the water to flush the sink.

  • a soil moisture test kit to ascertain the gardens water requirements rather than watering unnecessarily

  • a composting toilet.

  • greywater in the garden

  • a twin tub washing machine and reuse rinse water for more than one load.

You can conserve
water dramatically and without great cost.

It's a great family 'game' to play and can be very rewarding.
